The commemorative theme of this year’s Vancouver LIVERight Gala celebrates the remarkable accomplishments made possible through the generous support of medical professionals, the philanthropic community, and dedicated patients and volunteers. We are proud to honour gastroenterologist Dr. Alnoor Ramji as our Dr. Francis Ho Medical Honouree, and the VanOstrand brothers, Jimmy and David, as our Patient Honourees.
Dr. Alnoor Ramji’s commitment to clinical research has been instrumental in advancing liver health. Beginning with award-winning work during his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training, he has since served as a local principal investigator in more than 50 Phase II and Phase III clinical studies. His leadership in hepatitis C research—including participation in pivotal registration studies that contributed to Health Canada approvals—along with his work in hepatitis B, fatty liver disease, and cholestatic liver conditions, has significantly advanced patient care. His contributions to the Canadian Hepatitis C guidelines in 2012 and 2016 further reflect his national impact on clinical practice.
Jimmy and David VanOstrand, exemplify the extraordinary power of hope, family, and organ donation. Last year, Jimmy became the first living liver donor at Vancouver General Hospital in over a decade, donating a portion of his liver to save his younger brother David, who was living with a rare autoimmune liver disease. Their inspiring journey is a testament to the life-changing impact of liver transplantation and a powerful reminder of why Liver Canada’s work in research, education, advocacy, and patient support is so vital.
