CANADA, May 4, 2026 – Ahead of Women’s Health Week, Liver Canada is highlighting an under recognized connection between hormonal changes and liver disease risk in women, an important but often-overlooked area of women’s health.
A new national survey from Abacus Data, conducted on behalf of Liver Canada, shows a significant gap in awareness, with only 2 in 10 Canadians recognizing that menopause and hormonal changes can increase a woman’s risk of liver disease.
“Hormonal changes play an important role in women’s liver health, and this is an area we want more Canadians to be aware of,” said Jennifer Nebesky, President and CEO of Liver Canada. “Liver disease affects 1 in 4 Canadians, yet many don’t realize how factors like menopause and midlife hormonal shifts can influence risk.”
Liver disease is often referred to as a “silent” condition, with few symptoms appearing until it has progressed. For women, this risk can increase during midlife, when shifts in metabolism, weight distribution and insulin resistance can all affect liver health. At the same time, many cases are preventable through early awareness and small, sustained lifestyle changes.
Experts point to practical steps that can help reduce risk, including maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, moderating alcohol intake and speaking with healthcare providers about liver health during and after menopause. However, the survey findings suggest these conversations are not happening often enough.
“Greater awareness is an important first step,” added Nebesky. “With the right information and support, women can take meaningful action to protect their liver health at every stage of life.”

About Liver Canada
Liver Canada (LC), formerly the Canadian Liver Foundation, was established in 1969 by business leaders and doctors who believed liver disease needed a champion. Today, LC remains the only non-governmental organization in Canada dedicated to liver health and the main source of non-profit funding for all forms of liver disease.
Through research, education, advocacy and support, LC promotes liver health by improving prevention, screening, diagnostics and treatment, increasing public understanding and awareness of liver diseases, and supporting those affected. We’re changing the future of liver health for people across Canada, and we won’t stop until there’s liver health for all.
