Give Yourself the Gift of Health: The Canadian Liver Foundation Recommends Canadians Consider Healthy Alternatives Over the Holidays

OTTAWA – With the Government of Canada’s announcement of a temporary GST holiday on some alcoholic beverages, snacks and other food items, the Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) is urging Canadians to make liver-friendly choices this coming holiday season.

Be Aware of Your Liver Health

The liver is involved in processing everything you eat and drink and is a crucial part of your overall health. Consistent or over-indulgence of alcoholic and sugary foods during the holidays can put significant stress on your liver and create long-term health challenges. The CLF encourages Canadians to take simple steps to reduce these risks:

  • Limit Alcohol Consumption: Excessive drinking can damage liver cells and lead to conditions like fatty liver disease or cirrhosis (scarring). Non-alcoholic alternatives such as mocktails are a festive and healthy way to celebrate, giving your liver a break.
  • Moderate Sugar Intake: Overeating sugary treats can contribute to Metabolic Dysfunction–Associated Liver Disease (MASLD), a concern that extends to children. Consider smaller portions or healthier dessert options for the whole family.
  • Balance Your Meals: Pair indulgent holiday treats with liver-friendly foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Mocktails: A Festive and Health-Conscious Trend

Mocktails are increasingly popular, offering a tasty and creative way to celebrate without alcohol. These non-alcoholic beverages are an excellent way to enjoy the holidays while prioritizing liver health.

“Mocktails are a wonderful way to enjoy the celebration without compromising your health,” says Jennifer Nebesky, CEO of the Canadian Liver Foundation. “They’re not only delicious, but they also set a positive example for children, showing that healthy choices can be fun and festive.”
