It results in your liver struggling to produce and secrete bile, the essential fluid that helps eliminate toxins and digest fats. When bile doesn’t flow properly, harmful chemicals can build up in the blood, and vital fat-soluble nutrients (A, D, E, K) may not be absorbed. Over time, this can lead to serious liver damage.

Right now, the incidence rate of PFIC is anywhere between 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 100,000 births. PFIC accounts for 10 to 15% of liver transplants in children.

Recognizing the Signs

PFIC may show up in different ways, some common signs include:

Severe itching

Difficulties gaining weight

Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

Bleeding and poor bone growth caused by vitamin K deficiency

Inflammation of the liver and spleen

Fatigue

What You Can Do

PFIC can't be prevented because it is genetic, but early detection and action can truly transform the journey. Here’s how care can help:

Vitamin supplements: Help replenish the fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) that your body may struggle to absorb.

Odevixibat: Can bring relief from itching.

Ursodiol (UDCA): A medication that helps ease bile flow and supports liver health by reducing elevated liver enzymes.

Talk to your doctor if you think you may have PFIC. An early diagnosis could make all the difference.

You Are Not Alone

Living with PFIC can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to face it alone.
