These \u201chigh-risk\u201d livers make a complicated situation more complex for the over 400 Canadians waiting on the liver transplant list.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having no option but to wait even a few more days can be a life or death situation for some of these patients.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver Canada is proud to support the work of one of our partner\u2019s, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cntrp.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Canadian Donation And Transplant Research Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDTRP). The CDTRP is investigating numerous methods to use these \u201chigh-risk\u201d livers safely, thereby ensuring little to no donor-livers go to waste.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/liver.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Access-to-Transplant_CNTRP1-e1528229648811.jpg\" alt=\"Doctor markus selzner kneeling beside the OrganOx metra\u00ae\" \/>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the use of a machine called the OrganOx metra\u00ae, donor-livers are stored in an environment mimicking that of the human body. They receive blood, are maintained at body temperature and are closely monitored by doctors\u2014keeping the liver in great shape before a transplant. Currently, there are limited numbers of OrganOx metra\u00ae machines in Canada, but one day this technology may be a staple in every transplant centre across the country.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, these groundbreaking CDTRP clinical trials led by the teams of Dr. James Shapiro (Edmonton) and Dr. Markus Selzner (Toronto)<\/span><b> transplanted 13 livers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would not have been otherwise unfit if using conventional storage techniques. Additionally, this trial included some livers that had been turned down by all US transplant programs before being rescued on the metra\u00ae and being transplanted safely in Canada.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/liver.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Access-to-Transplant_CNTRP-2.jpg\" alt=\"Members of the CNTRP and the OrganOx metra\u00ae\" \/><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liver Canada would like to thank the CDTRP once again for their tremendous advancements in liver transplantation.
