The Canadian Liver Foundation was the first organization in the world committed to reducing the incidence and impact of liver disease through research and education. In keeping with our pioneering mandate, the CLF established a Gold Medal Award in 1983 to recognize doctors and scientists who have made a significant contribution to moving the field of liver research forward.
Today, the award is given jointly with the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver (CASL). The CLF-CASL Gold Medal recipients comprise an impressive list of internationally recognized liver specialists:
2013 Dr. Albert Czaja
Dr. Czaja has excelled in the clinical care of patients with autoimmune liver diseases, as a leader in autoimmune liver disease research, and as a superb educator as well as mentor to many young clinicians. His autoimmune liver diseases clinic at the Mayo Clinic was a world-renowned clinic.
Dr. Czaja is always one of the main authors of autoimmune liver disease practice guidelines and has published over 250 papers. Many of his trainees have become important leaders in hepatology. His contributions to the field of autoimmune liver disease have made him a well-worthy winner of this award.
