Over 20 years ago I was feeling a bit tired and since my husband had just been diagnosed with high-cholesterol, I thought I'd better have my blood checked too. After a few more blood tests and a meeting with a specialist I was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC). Over the past 20 years this disease has progressed slowly but steadily. At first I wasn't on any medication and seeing my hepatology team once a year, then in 1997 I started medication and the doctors appointments and testing became more frequent. I was happily experiencing life's challenges and joys and then early this year came the news that my blood work was getting worse and my MELD score was increasing. Last month the MELD score reached a point where my file has been handed over to the Multi Organ Transplant Program (MOTP) team in Halifax. I'm now undergoing the work-up required before meeting with all the specialists and and surgeons in a few weeks time. Hopefully, everything will be OK and I can be placed on the transplant list.
